On 4 May 2024, we left Antigua on board Blue Alligator for the Azores. 22 days later, we dropped anchor in the outer harbour of Horta. In between were squalls, doldrums and encounters with whales. But above all a special time at sea.
After just over two months in the Caribbean, it’s time to think about returning. But was the trip even worth it?
Nach etwas über zwei Monaten in der Karibik ist es Zeit, an die Rückkehr zu denken. Aber hat sich der Trip überhaupt gelohnt?
On 1 February, Blue Alligator set off from Cape Verde to cross the Atlantic. A journey subject to the whims of Aeolus and Neptune.
Am 1. Februar startete Blue Alligator von den Kapverden aus zur Atlantiküberquerung. 2100 Seemeilen lagen vor uns, eine Reise ganz den Launen von Aeolus und Neptun ausgesetzt.
Bevor wir die Bijagos verliessen, segelten wir durch enge Kanäle quer durch den Archipel. Das Echolot war das wichtigste Instrument an Bord und ich musste mich ganz auf die elektronische Karte und das GPS verlassen. Ich hatte schon vorher gemerkt, dass die Navigation auf den Bijagos ihre Tücken hat.
Before we left the Bijagos, we sailed across the archipelago through narrow channels. The depth sounder was the most important instrument on board and I had to rely entirely on the electronic chart and GPS. I had already realised before that navigation in the Bijagos has its pitfalls.
Segeln mit einer Bestimmung: Deshalb bin ich im September 2023 mit Blue Alligator von Santa Maria Richtung Guinea-Bissau aufgebrochen. Unsere Expedition sollte dem Plastikmüll im Archipel auf den Grund zu gehen. Aber am Ende war unsere Rolle eine andere.
Sailing with a bpurpose: that’s why I set off from Santa Maria in September 2023 with Blue Alligator towards Guinea-Bissau. Our expedition was to learn more about the plastic waste in the archipelago. At the end, our role turned out to be quite different.
